When the nip of autumn nights hits the air it is a warning that you had better get ready because winter is sure to follow. If you do not make preparation now, you may find yourself calling for emergency winter plumbing services.

While many newer homes have automatic draining outdoor spigots, older homes have spigots that contain water. When the weather is heading below freezing and expected to stay there for several hours, you will need to make sure that those pipes are insulated against winter’s cold temperatures.

The problem is that water is one of the few substances that expand when it freezes. While this is beneficial to us in many ways it can be very detrimental to your plumbing. The sturdiest of pipes will often split under the pressure of frozen water.

In addition to insulating external pipes, you will also want to be sure that the temperature inside your home is kept at a minimum of fifty degrees. This will ensure that your other plumbing does not freeze. On extremely cold nights, you may need to open lower cupboard doors to allow the heat to get to those pipes.

If despite all these measures you still have pipes that are freezing, you may need to purchase electrical heat tape to use on the problem areas. This tape uses the current from your household electricity to produce enough heat to prevent the pipes from freezing.

If you have a well and have problems with freezes in the pump house, leaving a light on in the building can sometimes supply the necessary heat to prevent freezing from occurring.

Another winter plumbing problem that sometimes exists is plugged drains. The colder weather causes grease and detergents to mix and form a hard solid that can prevent pipes from draining properly.

While must of us must use detergents in our homes and allow them to drain through the drain system, we can avoid pouring grease down the drain. The truth of the matter is that no matter how much hot water you pour down the drain after grease, the grease is eventually going to get cold and solidify. This can lead to slow draining fixtures or ones that are completely plugged. Instead of pouring grease down the drain, pour it into an empty metal can and allow to solidify. It can then be sent out with the rest of the garbage and not down your drain.

If your house is plumbed with natural gas, you may need a plumber to assist in adding space heaters during the winter. Modern gas space heaters are an efficient way to heat a small area while having the larger central heating unit turned down. Since only a smaller area is being heated, you are able to save money on your heating bill. The plumber will be able to make the installation of the heater and test for leaks. In a new gas outlet is needed, he will have the tools necessary to install that line so the heater can be placed where it is needed.

When you need winter plumbing services, your plumber will be glad to assist you. However, if he can help you prevent the need of emergency services, he is happy to offer this help.
